WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An unfortunate side of storm recovery is the realization that people are taking advantage of closed businesses.
At least three storefronts have been looted in the area. One business was robbed while the eye of Florence was crossing Wilmington.
Snowden’s Jewelers off College Road says thieves smashed the front door and ransacked several display cases, getting away with thousands of dollars of merchandise.
Some of the items stolen were designer watches only sold in the Wilmington area.
Owner Chris Snowden says insurance will most likely not cover the thefts because they happened during a storm and right now there’s little that can be done to help.
“We’re hoping to have some kind of a recovery sale to help recoup some of our loss,” Snowden said. “Prayers, prayers are the best thing that we can get right now.”
The ceiling of the building was also severely damaged and the floor has water damage.
Snowden says an investigation is ongoing with police and he has a $1,000 reward for information.
